Cross-border Doctoral Meeting UPPA/UNIZAR 2024/25

Objectives

This fifth edition of the UPPA-UNIZAR cross-border doctoral seminars, which was held in Jaca (Spain) from 23 to 25 October 2024, aimed to continue the dynamic of exchanges initiated during the four previous editions. This year, 20 PhD students from UPPA and 20 students from UNIZAR took part in the event. 10 PhD students from the Public University of Navarre (UPNA), member of the UNITA alliance, were also invited to take part.

This year, particular attention was paid to the following points:

  •         Promoting the UNITA European alliance, to which both universities belong, and the new opportunities for collaboration and exchange that it opens up,
  •         Raising awareness of the possibilities for cross-border collaboration as part of doctoral programme, and in particular co-supervised theses,
  •         Training doctoral students in cross-border skills, in particular intercomprehension and scientific communication,
  •         Raising awareness of a cross-border infrastructure of worldwide importance, the Canfranc Underground Laboratory,
  •         Providing PhD students from both universities with an international peer forum in which they can disseminate their research work, discover the research areas of both universities and seek synergies and collaborations.
Organisation

All the activities took place at the Residencia Universitaria de Jaca (Spain). In order to encourage exchanges between doctoral students from the two universities, including those from third countries, the presentation sessions were held in English.

As in previous editions, a varied programme of activities combined lectures, round tables, workshops (focusing in particular on the development of communication skills) and presentations of the theses of the participating doctoral students, in the form of oral presentations and posters*, as well as a guided tour of the Canfranc Underground Laboratory.

*The prize for the best poster was awarded to a UPPA PhD student.

In addition to the academic programme, informal exchanges between doctoral students and social activities were encouraged: visits to the Jaca citadel, the cathedral and the Romanesque art museum, as well as an ice-skating activity.
